Legally I cannot charge for counseling, but can I put up a Paypal account for donations?
~*~Tabby Cat~*~ N.O.T.W. asked:
I’m going to school for counseling, but there are people I have been working with on some issues. Would it be a bad idea to put up a Paypal account link on my myspace for donations? Legally? Morally? I wouldn’t be asking for anything, but it would be there if someone felt led to give.

Practicing without a license is still just that. Even if your services are free, it would be the same problem.
Its like saying, “I’ll have sex with you and its optional if you wish to donate money to my favorite charity …. me”. Naturally if they want to have sex with you they will donate.

You can say please send me money because I’m poor and make a pay pal account. If people are willing to give there is nothing wrong with receiving.

The only advice I have for you is to be VERY careful when it comes to people’s psychi. I am also a psychology student and one thing I have learned is that even when you feel you are prepared, it is very difficult to do the right thing without the total package of complete training.
I would not charge anyone right now without a full counseling degree as I do not think it to be ethical at all. For now, just get experience and make sure that these people know it is for advice only, not counseling. You can use it on your resume as well, if done under the term “advice”. But counseling without a proper degree… uh-uh.
Looking at what people have said above, I will respond with this… there are tons of people who do “advice” columns in the US who do not have a degree at all. This does not fall under counseling and you do not need a liscence. However, it is free and only advice, not counseling. Be choosey on who you help and for God Sake, make sure they totally understand that you are only giving advice and not counseling them in any way.
I give advice all the time to my friends, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Also, many schools have professors who will sponsor you. At my school, if you want to go into counseling, a professor will oversee you, even though you do not have a liscence, he/she does and oversees all that you do. This is also an option.
Its still free of charge, though. If you need money, bartend… you get to do the same thing and have a lot more fun while you get through school!
