What are the benefits of having a Ph.D in psychology over a masters in counseling?

Support HR 1207 asked:

I’m not going to charge money. I would like to become a high school teacher and give counseling for free in my spare time.

Even if your services are free it would place you in a better position if you have a doctorate. And if, in the future, you should want to open a practice it will definitely benefit you.

A Ph.D is psych is more prestigious than a masters in counseling, for sure. You don’t need any training whatsoever to become a therapist. In order to be a psychologist, it’s pretty well know that that person knows (or should know ;) their stuff. Good for you- I hope that you really enjoy what you want to do! You must have a really big heart and I’m sure you will make a difference in quite a few kids’ lives in the future!

I think a PhD. would give you a better understanding to everything (from mental illnesses/disorders to stress and anxiety, OCD, etc.) if you’re going to be doing counseling in your spare time.

PhD is way better than Masters. You can find a better job with PhD but therre is a long way to reach there.

In most states, if you only have a Master’s, you have to practice under supervision of a Ph.D and you can only call yourself a therapist. A Ph.D permits you to run your own practice.
